With the excitement for the film industry focused on the Academy Awards, a group of designers, manufacturers, and production companies were focusing on a post ceremony dinner event hosted by Vanity Fair.
The event took place at Mortons, a restaurant in Beverly Hills. The capacity of the restaurant needed to be increased threefold.
The project required a 70ft x 90ft roof cover. Because of the modular nature of Total Structures design, this could be achieved using a combination of two existing systems. An additional annex (40ft x 30ft) was required to allow a smooth covered transition from Morton’s to the extended area. The structure for this area was made from existing truss stock with a number of custom built components to allow full integration with the main roof.
Finally, Kevin Greenwood of Show International was drafted in to fit the fabric for the waterproofing and sidewalls that required custom fitting on site. The nature of the site required the use of on site portable fabric welders to seal the skin around obstacles such as power poles and to ensure a sealed fit to the restaurant building.
The whole project had to be permitted by the local building department and had to be considered a permanent structure. This required a good deal of planning for emergency exits and disabled ramps.
The project was designed Basil Walter of Sweeny Walter Architects, New York and Patrick Woodruff, The project was managed by Sarah Marks and Pete Barford with Jeremy Thom on site for Vanity Fair.
